When there is only one point of light control, you can use a single pole, single throw (SPST) switch. But when you want multiple power points or devices to be controlled by a individual switch, then multiway switching comes in handy. A 3 way switch allows control from two or more locations, for example in a main hallway, or at the entrance and exit to the room. The load may be controlled with a light bulb, or other electrical device.
Many applications where 3 way switching is required. For example, in a house you might want to control the light(s) in a hallway, stairwell, going into the basement and large room all from the same location. To achieve this you would need one or more multiway switching devices such as a multiway wall switch.
